Shima Onsen area

  • 5 min. drive
    The Giant’s kettles of Shima Onsen are a Gunma-designated natural monument.
    They are located about 130 meters downstream from the Akishika Bridge in Shima-Akishika and there are eight in different sizes.

  • 7 min. drive
    A man-made lake that was made with a dam in the Shimagawa River.
    Approx. 4 km walking path around the lake is famous for its new spring greenery and autumn colors and is a great place for enjoying the natural beauty of Shima Onsen.

  • 10 min. drive
    A man-made lake that is 5 km around.
    The color of the lake changes several times over the course of the day depending on the amount of sunlight and time of day. Because of this, it is nicknamed the Five-Colored Swamps of Ura-bandai.

  • 10 min. drive
    Yakushido Hall that is a designated national important cultural property.
    Yakushi, or Medicine Buddha, is said to cure long incurable diseases and save all people from the suffering of illness.

    Opened at the end of 2012.
    This is a pottery studio in the Shima Onsen town (Kirinokidaira shopping street)

  • 6 min. walk
    Fee: Adult 1,500 yen / Child 500 yen (including materials)
    Studio in an Azuchi-Momoyama period building that was originally in Kyoto and rebuilt here.
    Try making something for yourself and see a display of 1,000 pieces including toys with gimmicks.

Towards Nakanojo

  • 10 min. drive
    Michi-no-eki Reizan Takeyama is home to various facilities including Takeyamakan where you can try making your own soba, a thatched roof soba restaurant Keyaki, and Boken Toride (adventure playground) for kids to play.

  • 20 min. drive
    This building was designated by Gunma Prefecture as an important cultural property as one of the few Western-style schools built in the early Meiji Era.

  • 20 min. drive
    A cafe for enjoying lunch made from local ingredients and a shop selling traditional crafts and artwork by local artists you can only get here.
    They also feature a festival plaza where various events are held, for both families and couples to leisurely enjoy.

Towards the Tsukiyono

  • 60 min. drive
    The top hand-made glass factory in Japan that attracts many tourists.
    They are home to Trial Workshop that offers factory tours and glassware-making experiences, Museum of Glass Art, and the Crystal Gallery.

  • 50 min. drive
    This roadside station is located in Sukawadaira that retains the Japanese landscape of older times. The villages on the expansive grounds is sprinkled with craft houses where you can try woodworking, bamboo work, paper making, and more.
    Enjoy browsing, creating, and shopping.

  • 60 min. drive
    This market sells seasonal ingredients delivered directly from local farmers.
    They have a restaurant and free footbath, so you can take a refreshing break on your drive.

  • 40 min. drive
    An actual castle that was built in Medieval Scotland was transferred to this spot along national route 145 (Japan Romantic Road) and set in a Medieval European town recreated around it.
    It is full of delightful things to see, including the stone chapel, restaurants, gallery, and shops.

    Michi-no-eki Nakayamabonchi that is slightly off national route 145 sells fresh vegetables, konjac made from fresh konjac potatoes that is a local specialty, and local hand-processed foods.

Towards the Ikaho IC

  • 50 min. drive
    One of the best rafting spots of the Kanto region in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture.
    They have a branch in Shima Onsen, where you can enjoy canoeing on Lake Okushima.

  • 35 min. drive
    You can see fireflies in the Narusawa River that flows from the Hakojima Water Spring from mid-June to late July each year.

  • 55 min. drive
    This roadside station has a restaurant where you can have local cuisine, a resting place to refresh yourself, and an event stage.
    Its shop sells tons of local specialties from Gunma and Komochi.

  • 35 min. drive
    This roadside station is located along the Nagano-kaido Road heading from the Shibukawa-Ikaho IC on the Kan‐etsu Expressway to Toshimaya.
    Stop by on your way to and from Toshimaya.
